Board retains Category 2 status for 1680 Bryant Street

The Palo Alto Historic Resources Board voted 3-1 to retain 1680 Bryant Street as a Category 2 resource on the city’s Historic Resources Inventory. The action went against staff’s recommendation that the board advise the City Council to reclassify the property as Category 3. One board member was absent.

Staff said Category 1 and 2 resources receive a higher level of review for substantial remodels. Keeping the Category 2 designation maintains Historic Resources Board review and the local demolition delay that staff said would have been removed by a downgrade.

Staff described the property as a Prairie-style residence associated with architect John Hudson Thomas. It has been listed as Category 2 since 1978. A July 2025 evaluation found the property individually eligible for the local inventory under criteria 2, 5 and 6, but concluded that the loss of substantial portions of the original design supported Category 3 status. A one-story wing that once connected two larger sections was removed after a mid-century subdivision, and the southern portion was demolished in 1997.

Board members who supported retaining the designation called the remaining building a rare and significant Prairie-style example and an important work by Thomas. The member who favored reclassification described the structure as fragmentary and considered Category 3 technically appropriate under historic-integrity standards. A public commenter also opposed the downgrade, citing the building’s distinctive architecture and concerns about demolition and redevelopment.
