Commission urges City Council to endorse Proposition 1

The Human Relations Commission voted 6-0 to recommend that the Palo Alto City Council endorse California Proposition 1, an $11.25 billion veterans and affordable-housing bond measure. The recommendation is advisory and does not establish a city position on the measure.

Commissioners said the measure’s potential to expand statewide affordable-housing funding could support Palo Alto’s housing-supply goals. The proposed bond includes $5.1 billion for multifamily rental housing construction and rehabilitation, $1.1 billion for affordable-housing acquisition and preservation, and $1.25 billion for state-funded mortgages for California veterans.

The measure also includes $1.1 billion for first-time homebuyers, $1 billion for farmworker, tribal and student housing, $500 million for housing infrastructure and $200 million for housing programs. Staff will include the commission’s recommendation in a report to the City Council on ballot measures.
