Prior actions will return for new votes

The Public Art Commission will revisit action items from a prior meeting after staff said a Brown Act irregularity required the previous minutes to be amended and the actions to be put to new votes.

Staff was seeking a special meeting on Oct. 6, 7 or 8, preferably at 7 p.m., and asked commissioners to provide their availability. Staff also planned to move a separate action item to that meeting because its staff report and dollar amount were not ready in time for the Sept. 17 agenda packet.

Commission seeks more detail on Hillview sculpture walk

Commissioners requested clearer visitor access, parking signage and a maintenance plan for sculptural seating during an interim review of a proposed public-art installation at 3415 Hillview Avenue. Commissioners expressed support for the curated sculpture-walk concept, but no formal action was recorded.

The proposal would distribute works by six artists along a central campus route and in a former fountain-planter area. The selection includes polished mirrored-steel sculptures, a figurative aluminum work and two sculptural seating pieces. Most of the works would be about 7 feet tall; the presenter said one geometric sculpture shown at approximately 12 to 14 feet would be reduced to about 7 feet.

Commissioners focused on whether visitors could find and enter the site. The applicant said the campus would become multi-tenant, with roads and sidewalks open, and that new signs would include directions to the sculpture walk. The final submission is expected to clarify public and visitor parking.

The commission also sought more information about the seating pieces’ wood, upkeep and eventual replacement. The applicant said the painted finish could be touched up on site and the wood might ultimately need replacement. The final submission will include a maintenance discussion. The developer expects work to begin in November, while staff and the applicant said they hoped to return for final approval in October.
